In the space of just 15 years, Bitcoin has gone from an anonymous cryptography project to a major emerging asset with a market capitalization of more than $2 trillion. In January 2024, ten spot Bitcoin ETFs launched into the US market from some of the largest asset managers in the world. In March 2025, the United States launched the world’s first Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, signaling a new dawn for nation states gaining exposure to the emerging asset. Younger generations look to Bitcoin as a “savings technology” - an alternative to both bonds and even the S&P 500. But what is Bitcoin, and why is it so hard to understand?
